I am converting the EM-1 into an SP AC-9. I know they went into service at El Paso in 1939 and moved to California in 1953. I don't want to put X3809 on the number boards but would like to put a train number such as I-944 with green flags and markers. Don't see that often on a model. I have a copy of an Alamagordo and Santa Rosa Subdivisions timetable No. 53 dated 9/27/1959. They refer to three freights #'s 990, 992, 994 and The Golden State #4 and a mail #40. So, my question is; was it likely that back in the 1940's and early '50's the same train numbers would have been used as in 1959. I have a picture of AC-9 #3804 carrying train number 992. The timetable says that 992 was a freight but the picture shows passenger car behind the tender.
Any thoughts about how The SP used train designation numbers back in the good old days?
