Well, I tried to match the colors at least 4 times, but failed.  This still isn't close, but the model cant take any more layers of paint ;D ;D

I wanted to do this in Z scale, to take advantage of new doors and door track from Robert Ray.

edit:  I should mention that this is the best I could do given the short deadline. ;)

Looks great Tom!  In your earlier post you complained about the color being too gray, but to me the prototype looks grayer than the model.  Is this really grimy black & yellow?

Could you tweet a few bullets on methods and order of operations?  Paint the green, then use the surface rust treatment from the GWIX thread, or something else?

It's hell working to a deadline...

Gary,

I started with the Rust base coat made with spray paint as described in my book (funny, but I actually started this model a few years ago!).

The green shades were made using Grimy Black and Reefer Yellow initially, but I was also mixing Undercoat light gray.  I don't really know what I ended up with - I just mixed and mixed until I gave up ;D  Serious ;D  But follow up with the GWIX treatment.

The colors I was complaining about a few pages back was probably iteration 1 or 2. ;D

Now that I'm finished, I'll unsticky this thread and find something else.

Thanks Tom.  Now if I could only find my copy of your book.  It's in the stacks somewhere...

BTW, does anyone have a decent online reference for color mixing with paint?

I missed this posting somehow, but I'm going to join. This is an Athearn Genesis car that I had painted for an ex PL&E car I was going to do a couple of years ago. I painted it using Poly Scale paint. I don't remember the mixture, but I would think I used, Burlington Northern Green, Engine Black, Reefer White. First I shaved off the tack boards and other details that were on the door and not on the prototype. The color should be good to start with, and I'll start weathering using gouache. I will post more as I go along.

Since I am going to have a paper mill on the new layout I am going to be in need of quite a few shortline cars. Lets kick this off again!
