If the Lincoln Funeral train re-enactment happens (MUCH money needs to be raised) the train will terminate at the station across from my office. The Great Western depot from which Lincoln left Springfield to become President is adjacent to the Courthouse where I worked for 22 years and the tracks (and the 1940's era GM&O now Amtrak station) where his funeral train terminated is in view of my current office.
The car was the 1860's version of Air Force One and was so opulent that Lincoln refused to use it while the country was at war. Ironically, his first trip on the car was for his funeral ride back to Springfield. Lincoln lie in state at what is now called the Old State Capitol which is 1/2 block on the other side of my office. By the time he was back in Springfield the train had been en route for IIRC two weeks so they filled the House Chamber where his body was displayed with dozens of live pine trees to 'freshen the air.'
There are currently fundraising efforts to restore the now derelict original entrance to Oak Ridge cemetery which has not been in use for many decades. It is still an active cemetery and the site of Lincoln's tomb so a more modern entrance was created.
Hopefully all of the re-creation events will occur as planned in April 2015.
