I know they do to SoCal.  UPS would run triple 28s south of Las Vegas on I-15.

I'd also see double 40-45s on I-15.

IIRC the original operational trials of the triples and long-doubles were the I-80 and I-15 corridors between terminals in SoCal or Reno, and Salt Lake City. I think the SoCal terminals are around Barstow; I can't imagine Caltrans allowing triples south of Victorville and over Cajon - too windy, too steep.

There have been recent legislative attempts in Nevada to outlaw the triples. The truck drivers (versus the trucking companies) assert that the third trailer can be blown into a harmonic situation and fishtail into the other lane(s), even jackknife, before the driver has any hope of correcting it.

When UPS shipped be out west for my training, I seen more triples and other double arrangements that out here in the East would definitely have ones head scratching.

We run triple 28s, 45-28-28, 48-45-28, 48-28-28, Doubles obvisously 28-28, but also 48-45, 48-28, 45-28.  And if there is in $0s in the pool that one hub has and trying to get rid of, that will definitely be seen in the mix.  As well as some of the old drop-frames (a real PIA to unload especially when some rocket scientist decides to load all the bulk and irregulars in the bottom portion).

Okay, to get this discussion back on track.... so to speak  :P .... allow me to observe that it seems better to put all these trailers on trains.
