You could also look for larger scale ship models and use the
life boats for n scale boats and build your own mast.

What type of sail boat do you want - single sail or one with
tons of sails ?

IMO, a 3" n scale (40 boat) is getting more like a Yacht .

That sure is some blue water Mark...I kid, I kid.

The hull (which I used for my log pond tug) is 2.25" long.

Looks like a winner to me. Any idea if there's an American source.

Heck, that was just the "mock up" water. The final product was even bluer!  :D

What can I say? My blue water issues are well documented

Thank you again, everyone, for many helpful suggestions.

I'm going to try these:

http://www.bluejacketinc.com/honscale.htm

(scroll down to the pair of n scale "lobster" boats.)   They look pretty good, and I think I can modify them
with a simple mast and sail.   They are between 2-3" long.

Bluejacket has been my supplier of choice for many years now. I've never tried their resin boats, but the pewter ones (sold under Fittings) are very good.

Mark,

Try painting your water pure black, then use a gloss finish with some depth, either a coating of resin or a few coats of polyurethane. When photographed, the gloss will pick up reflections from the surroundings, just like real water does. Water is blue because the sky is blue, or gray when the skies are cloudy, or green when surrounded by vegetation, etc. I tried to cheat once with a "near-black" that was on sale for $1 per gallon (a bad mix, I guess), and forever after wished I had spent the $20 for a gallon of pure black.

Pete,
When they are erady, I'll be in for a pair of 21's and a single 27.  MSO Baton Rouge uses them regularly, and I want to haev them to rotate out of my slice of the Mississippi.  Plus the make interesting loads . . . .

Phillip,

What are you looking for, in terms of details and finish? I don't want to hijack this thread, as Max seems to have found a number of sources for a sailboat. I've cast RIB hulls with just the control stand, fuel tank and lockers. Do folks also want the the outboard motors (jet drives), various seating arrangements for both 21' and 27' versions, and other details such as catch-lines? Do folks want these finished and painted, or will nice resins hulls be enough? These are not very big, at about 1.6" and 2.1" long, so the material cost is minimal.

The different technique I used to cast the 21-footer worked much better, so I'll remold the 27-footer later this week. No photos yet, as I am working between two locations, and my cameras are at the other location.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I actually like my blue water. I just can't get anybody else to join the club  :D

That's certainly one school of thought, but this article begs to differ, with pictures:

Certainly the Kankakee River isn't black from most angles:

And I chose my "water" color on my module to try to reflect that. (Note the difference between the two pictures--that's the same paint, under different lighting.)

Zox,

Great points, of course! I'm just inherently biased toward deepwater scenes, rather than brownwater scenes. I'm used to harbors, not midland rivers. I guess a river was called the Red River for a reason.

When I was young, I was really disappointed at gazing down at the Colorado River from the edge of the Grand Canyon and seeing that it was--gasp!--brown. Doh! Colo Rado.

Now I'm wondering what color Mark's log pool should be. Scummy green with hints of yellow floating on top?

And, while we're on the topic (or way off it), what color should the Duck River be? ;) Or the Mad River?
