Stretching out the front passing may be for naught, if the passing sidings in the rear aren't also lengthened.
I stretched it out mainly because the ends converge at curves, which moves the fouling point back from the switches a ways. I think it also looks a little smoother.
Incidentally, about the only way to lengthen the yard tracks without lengthening the door is to use curved switches...
