I've been impressed with Sievers product, but it seems to have the opposite design philosophy than what I'm after - lots of legs.
Also, I'm kind of cheap and kind of like figuring stuff out on my own.

I am building a module for a new club member and got the material today from HD. I had to pick through a s#!+load of 1 x 4 x 8s
To find 4 that I  can use. Worse yet I had to pick through almost a whole bunk of 2 x2s to get 2. Because I don't have a truck any more I can't haul a full sheet so I bought 2 pre-cut 2' x 4' pieces. Not economical,  but easy. They come in 4 x 4, 2 x 4, and 2 x 2.
No truck anymore, but I can haul 8 footers in the moose wagon
 Steel studs would work, but you need to prepared cut them.
The 2 red sections could be supported by the adjacent sections if the blue had wall brackets and the green had legs where you have them marked.
I have some brackets that are 2" long with a 45 degree rod for support. I got them at HD and I use them to store modules on the walls in my garage.
Too bad you don't still live close anymore.

Thanks for the suggestions Greg!   I'll probably do something similar. 
I made the mistake of ordering some lumber (for garage shelves) from Home Depot for delivery.  Oh My God I think they went out of their way to find the most warped 1x4s they had, and the trashiest 2'x4' pieces of 1/4" plywood.  Good think I was planning to trim them down anyway - the full sheet wasn't even usable, and looked like it had been sitting in water for a while, which is a neat trick here in Tucson.

 I wish I weren't so far away from you as well.  There's a house across the alley from me for sale, if you like blisteringly hot weather.

Here's my framing plan.  1x3s, fastened to the walls.  Two 20" shelf braces on the left wall.  3 legs (green).
Blue line is layout edge (approx.).

You might need to either move the leg that's on the bottom section to the center or add another leg to the right. Just sayin

No , not a fan of blistering heat, freezing cold, high humidity, hurricanes, or tornados.  That's why I live here in the
temperent rain forest. You remember, October moss season is in full glory.

@nickelplate759 , Congrats on the new home!

You might already have decided on 1x3, but may I suggest ripping 3/4" birch plywood into 3" strips if you haven't yet? 

If you don't have a table saw, remember that HD has inexpensive tool rental.  You could rent a table saw for 1/2 day for $40, or you could pay them to rip them for you on their panel saw.

The $84 would yield 15 3" x 96" strips (2" lost to saw kerf) so I'm not sure how many sheets you'd need, as opposed to $146 for the 1x3's for the same quantity.

Plywood wont be warped and all of the edges will be square after ripping.  Plywood holds screws well when properly pre-drilled.

Just a thought.

@x600 - Greg - good to know you aren't bothered by earthquakes and volcanos...
That leg is off-center on purpose.  The right and bottom sides there are both mounted to the walls of the room.

@Lemosteam - John - yeah, that's how I want to do it.  I did this for my last layout it it was SO much easier than 1x3s.  and 15 1x3x96" is exactly the number I need!
Problem is lack of local lumberyards that will do this (I miss Pratt's in Portland).  Home Depot/Lowes won't rip strips like that (so says their signage), no one else sells to consumers around here.   Still trying to figure out a way to get this done.

So, the plan is to top the frame with a layer of plywood and a layer of foam.
I'm not certain about thicknesses, but I'd like to keep it not much over 1".
Options are:
1/2" plywood, 1/2" foam
1/4" plywood, 1" foam

Thoughts?

There's no 2" foam to be had here.

5.2mm Lauan, with 1” foam. Depending on your spans, it will be fine unless you plan on walking on the layout.

@Lemosteam , what do you recommend for fastening the Lauan to the frame?.

Small bead of loctite power grab, and #6 square drive trim screws, these have a thread cutting feature and a flush setting head, but a pre drill might be best to set the head just below the surface. May need to slide a putty knife across the hole to remove ant burrs.

Same putty knife, glue and screws can be used to secure the foam.
