Who makes the thickest decal paper?

I'm thinking about trying decal paper to simulate the patch panels that many of the 'x29' box cars got later in their careers.  My latest thought is using a heavy decal.

Any ideas who makes the thickest sheet?

Have you thought about using metal duct tape? I got it at Home Depot and it is way better for ducts than regular duct tape (and adds a certain element of class in many of my typical home "repairs").  It is quite sticky and seems to be the right thickness. I have been meaning to try this on some of my resin Milwaukee Road ribside cars while (waiting for the new FVM cars to arrive) to provide some variety. I think that it will work pretty well. If not, it should peel off easily.

I have not.

I worry that it might be too thick in the sense that the rivets would not show from underneath at all. I'll have to check my pics closer, but I seem to remember that I might be able to simulate some of the rivets on the patch panel just by letting the old ones come through where appropriate, so a using a decal that would snug down might work well.

Still hatching it all out.

There was an article somewhere about using it to simulate patches along the bottom of the X29's.
I have some of the foil and it is pretty thin. Just stick it on and rub down with a old t-shirt.

I just slapped on a small piece and rubbed it with a Q-tip.


The foil comes in handy to "pimp" 1:25 scale autos, but also comes in a few flavors other than chrome.

I had thought about that but I;ve never used it.  Can you cut a good long straight line without mangling the foil?

Why don't you use Alclad 2 lacquer  ? Just mask off the patch area then spray black lacquer first then follow up with chrome or Aluminium or Stainless  Steel

Champ decals were notoriously thick, but I don't think they're around anymore...

I just sliced off a chunk and slapped it on to show the rivets. You can cut it straight with a new blade. You can zoom in on the article:

Seriously, just scribe a line.  Much easier, and all you notice from a patch panel in N is the light reflecting off the top edge.  You're not going to notice any thickness in that area, unless it's so thick that the rivets grow, which is not what you want either...

Mike, is that a Red Caboose car?  I was going to use those (i have all six CGWs that are basically useless because of the door) for the the cars that were sold and leased back but after the amount of work to take out the doors I decided to go MT all the way.

Nice job.

I'm sure scribing a line would achieve a good effect but that not where I'd like to start.  Besides, it's not just the panel along the bottom, there are new brace panels on either side of the door opening.  If I model those with any thickness, it might ruin the effect of the scribe.


I'll check out the foil next time I'm at a craft store.

Usually only better hobby shops carry it. Testors makes something similar, but I have never tried it so I can't say if it is just as good.

Yeah, Red Caboose car, B&O RaiseTheRoof party time on that one.

For the CGW Pullman door ("Reverse Creco") I cut styrene strip to fit in the door panels so they protrude instead:



But yeah, going to a corrugated door on the RC model not something I enjoy doing.
