Here is what I did with my free time this weekend.  I used all gauche paints for this so far.  I airbrushed the white on then I sprayed it with dullcote then I hand painted the dark streaks on.  I know I need to clean up the dark streaks on this but I would like to hear what others think of this.  I really noticed with the photos on the computer as to how dark the streaks are now.

I know I'm not working with a nice model but since its only my 3rd car I'm not ready to work on the better models yet.

Imho, your first stage looks great.  You've captured the feel of the prototype, and I wouldn't worry about the darkness of the rust stripes - they should fade a bit when you're finished.  Great start!

I really like the rust streak.

I'm not so sure about the white streaks though. The look a little overdone.

Yeah, that rust kicks a$$.  Very, very good.

I agree with Ed...  I see where you're going with the "chalking" of the lettering, and it's a very effective thing to do.  But I think, as Ed says, it's a little heavy.  If you can try to mute those white streaks a bit, I think you're on your way to being Mini Me to Tim Mann.

Either way, it looks way better than my stuff.

FWIW, I'll chime in and agree the rust streaks look great. And I also agree the chalk streaks are a bit OTT. However, I think the whole car could use a good "fade" job, and perhaps, in the process of taking the blue up a shade or two, the chalk effects will be toned down, along with the rust streaks, which should still look fine.

Nice,  streaking on the lettering a tad overdone  but everything else is nice!

One thing to note...

Both prototype cars are double door, and those dark rust streaks on either side of the door appear to match the end of the doors in the open position.  Since the model box you're working with is a single door car, it would logically only have the streak on the right side and not the left.

But in terms of technique, I'll say it again:  You've nailed that rust streak.  Looking forward to seeing your next project...

Love to hear what you think.  I did a wash of dirt color to tone down the white and gloss of the model.  I got the streaks to a color I like and I added the roof rust.

UPDATE 5-20-2008: I did some weathering to the trucks and got some sunny day to take a few photos outside and I've added these photos.
