You hadn't seen those in the HABS-HAER collection (I think that's the one) before?

The LOC is awesome. Back in college I had thought about wanting to work there. I may do it yet one of these days.

I think perhaps before the proliferation of cheap spray paint (1960s?) most graffiti was chalk or the like. In the late 1960s "modern" graffiti seemed to evolve out of NYC, and blossomed in the 1970s. There's a book out on Train Graffiti, I bet it would be a cool read:
