I used a "glue-shell" technique on a smaller scale on my Area 53 module, to smooth out the rather abrupt land contours created during construction:
It worked well in this case, but I'm not sure I'd want to use it over large areas the way Mr. Zane does. Then again, I'm primarily modeling central Illinois, so mountains aren't really an issue for me.
