Hi all.

It looks to me like the paint has been absorbed by the wood .. not sure how to fix this since I have never built a laser cut kit .. but it seems like you need to seal the wood somehow first ... I think painting the parts before putting them together is probably the key ..

Having the paint absorbed by the wood on a weathered structure such as this will be is not a bad thing. You do need to paint or stain the raw wood parts still showing. It's usually easier to finish the parts before assembly, especially if to be of a contrasting color.

With all tab and slot kits like yours, the key to having it look nice is the trim strips used to hide the tabs and slots. Notice how the tabs on the dormer (or whatever you call the little thing in natural wood color on the roof). Hiding those is the key. Next time you may want to paint the trim strips before you apply them. That way you can paint not just the top but all the sides also. And of course as pointed out, it'll make adding contrasting trim easier, much easier  ;) I even go so far with mine to add a filler (I like Squadron white not green putty) between the lap joints at the corners to make it appear as if the wood trim is 1 piece not 2. You can also go to a hobby store and buy precut wood 90 degree angle pieces and use those instead of the flat strips in the kit.

To get around the different amounts of paint that get absorbed by the wood you can do 2 things. Paint the basic sides before you add the details, that way the glue that leaks out from under the trim won't hamper the wood from accepting color. Of course it'd be best to not let any glue escape from under the trim, that's where kits with the pre-stickied trim is a nice idea but I've had mixed results myself with how well that type of trim sticks. The other thing to help hide uneven paint is to add some basic weathering, but you aren't at that stage you're still building the kit.  ;D

Having said all that, looks nice, I'm sure the finished kit will look pretty good.

I would say that the loading dock could be done with a wash of various weathering colours mixed together.  Lean torwards the gray, but add dirt, etc as well.
This will make it look like all the mess has been ground in.  Drybrush individual boards with different shades of gray.  Drybrush dirt onto the whole thing.  Maybe on the dock you could break an individual board or two.

Looks really good so far.
The only thing I notice is how wide the vertical trim boards at the corners are. They must be 2'wide or so?

awesome advice thanks everyone.

The reason for the variations in grey was my attempt at making it looked weathered. I guess I failed at that somewhat.

And yea those trim boards do look damn wide dont they? They just cover up the slots.

I think it looks just fine with the shades of gray. It appears to be nicely weathered and with a new/replacement thingy on top. To completely finish it off, I would NOT repaint. Just use some powdered chalks in shades of gray etc. brushed on, to bring out the weathering a bit more.
