The 14 roomette sleeper and coaches in the set lack the red pinstripes, at the top of the letterboard, present on the other cars in this set. I expect this follows prototype practice but wonder what is the reason, if any, for this?

Ruh Roh.  I see what you're saying, on the Kato images.  Were they also delivered without the stripes?

I haven't seen it mentioned as a prototype feature before, so I'm more leaning toward a mistake.

Here's an example of the stripe being there, but hidden in the roof edge overhang of the car design, and possibly misinterpreted as not being there...

My friend Pete (R) noticed this too.

He did a quick fix using masking tape and a sharpie.  :D

Masking tape and a Sharpie? I didn’t know that was even possible!

Make sure to burnish the tape very well or you'll have a disaster on your hands.

I’ve repaired the gold stripes on a Southern locomotive using this method. Don’t know if I would be willing to tackle an entire stripe.

Don't try this with a regular Sharpie! Oof! You might note that is a paint Sharpie. They make two lines of paint markers directed at the artist market. They're shortly to introduce a line of general-market paint markers, "Sharpie Creative Markers". Might be worth a try.

Coach #603 in 1968 did not have the top red stripe, according to Morning Sun Book's "Color Guide Vol 1".  I didn't see a picture of the 14-roomette sleeper, but a few other cars shown in UP colors also lacked that stripe.

Excellent point Mike!  When we hear Sharpie we (like I do) likely think of the ubiquitous ink markers with stinky "hot" solvent.  But this was specifically a paint marker Sharpie which is distinctively different than standard Sharpies.
