Athearn Boxcar 60 Foot Auto Parts Spares

I found a nice one in Milw colours, road number 4022, or at least is was nice until the post finished with it.  Now the couplers are broken and the roof is off  :(

I thought to find some spare trucks, but looking at the very long truck mounted couplers, I may as well go for some body mounted in instead.  Trucks are 70 tonne on one end and 100 tonne on the other, that cant be right, and held on by screws, what is correct? May as well fit metal wheels as well.  What are the MT options for body mounted couplers?

1023 or 1025 is my go to although most people seem to prefer 1015.

Yes, Athearn holds the trucks on with screws, although they usually don't mismatch trucks at the factory.

For correct trucks, look at the weights, under the reporting marks.  If the LD LMT and LT WT add up to 220,000 (or less) it probably has 70-ton trucks.  A total of 263,000 would be 100-ton trucks.

In this case, I have #4015, and it is a 100-ton car.

Can't say how it got this way, does seem strange.
Thanks for the tip: The numbers indicate it should be 100 Ton trucks.
I noticed that with a lot of used MT truck upgrades, they are seldom done correctly and don't have the right sized bolster pin ect, so just because its has been owned by another modeller doesn't really mean it's any good

That looks like something a railroad would do to get a wreck-damaged car to the shops for repair!  As long as the car is empty, or within the 70-ton gross weight limit, it would work fine.

On vacation, in 1978, we saw two the same day in Montana.  The first was not long after entering MT from Idaho, and included a bulkhead flat of lumber in the St Regis river.  This was after the electrics were retired, but the poles and messenger wires were still in place.  The crane operator decided that the pole was in the way, so he swung his boom around and knocked it, and the attached wires, into the river, with the flat ad lumber.

The second was between Deer Lodge and Butte, far enough from I-90 that we really couldn't see any details.  Not a good day for the MILW.

And, if one knows where to look, part of the last train out of Washington, when they abandoned the line, is still there, alongside what's now a public trail.  They dumped some boxcars, and simply pushed them out of the way, reassembled the rest of the train, and went on.  The cars are still there today!
