Micro-Trains 4 wheel Commonwealth Trucks

These are the trucks supplied with the single window coach. They're available separately and come with 36" wheels. Has anyone tried fitting 33" wheels to them? I have a caboose project that needs trucks like that but with 33" wheels. My biggest concern is the decreased clearance to the rails. It should be about 0.009", but is that enough to matter?

I haven't tried to do this particular change-over, but I doubt it would make a major difference.  There appears to be enough space under the truck frame to allow for dropping it the 1.5 scale inches without dragging on the rail.  The only adjustments that come to mind would be coupler mounting height and adjusting the trip pin clearance.  If you know what wheels you will be using, I'll try some if I have them, and give you a more certain answer.

That said...is the passenger truck the best choice? I ask simply because it seems a bit large for a caboose (unless the caboose is a drovers car or some such converted from a passenger car).  Would an express truck, like the one Athearn used under its Milk Reefer, be a better choice? (same general appearance, but a foot or two shorter wheelbase, and proportionally smaller in other dimensions- and comes with 33" wheels)

Note that those are not the same as the old MDC express truck (now also Athearn), which Spookshow IDs as a PS truck. Again, generally similar.  The ancient MDC ones I have have 33" wheels.

I have a mind like a steel trap...a VERY rusty, old steel trap.

Looks about right to me, once I cut off the outside brake shoes. 8' wheelbase on the prototype. The Micro Trains ones appeal because they are readily available.

Seems that Athearn has the exact match for this truck.
Athearn part # 90629 (ex MDC part 8985)  $5.89/pair (back when I bought them several years ago)
Commonwealth 2-axle truck
Wheelbase 8'
Wheels 32"
Axle length 0.540" (but in my experience 0.553" is a better fit)

Contact Athearn to see if they have them available. Email them your request to: parts@athearn.com  They are responsive and easy to deal with. Just few weeks ago I have ordered bunch of UP Challenger parts.

If they don't have them available I could spare one of mine. Let me know.

Not by any means.  You're *da*  MTL Superman Joe!
It just happens that Athearn has the same truck with the correct 33" wheels already.  It's good to have choices.
