Super trees & WS foliage clumps -- yes or no?

I mean, can they be mixed in one scene or does it look ridiculous? I need lots of trees on my layout, both in country and for city scenes, backyards, along ROWs and streams,  etc. i have a bunch of Plastruct trees and they work well with WS because they're foam "leaves" too. I'd like a few tall, really tall trees, in stands of shorter trees, with visible trunks. Foliage clumps are good for bush clusters, not so much trees.

I think @Dave V did this to good effect on his Juniata Division layout.

His trick was Super Trees up front and then clumps behind. I think he said it was a bit of a challenge making everything look good together. The big problem is that, if you're using the STs right, they're going to be FAR taller than anything made with clumps. That means you need to pay attention to your slopes to get everything to line up in a way that looks good.

Yep, this is what I did. That I used WS ground foam on the Supertrees meant that I could color-match the background foliage clusters perfectly. Ground foam looks OK as leaves in N scale, but now that I'm doing most of my work in HO, I prefer the Superleaf product from Scenic Express.

I applaud you wanting to use Supertrees. While the Colorado climate turns them brittle, back East that shouldn't be a problem for you. And it will totally up your game a few notches. Good luck!

Thus far I am using Scenic Express and Noch leaf products on my SuperTrees, but I make lots of small trees and bushes using smaller SuperTree pieces, and for those I sometime use ground foam and they they look good - gives more varability as well.  As for leaves, I find the Noch products to be finer; the ones from Scenic express strike me as a bit coarse.

Well, I live on Puget Sound so humidity's no problem.

Thanks to all you guys for the info. Dave, have thought about doing an article on your tree model mixing for a RR mag?

No, since I haven't done it since the Juniata Division layout which I sold to @eric220 six years ago.

Soon to be a fourth. Stay tuned for a Wild West HOn30 layout build some time next year.
