There are reports that the train exceeded 118 MPH. The crew reportedly jumped when they realized the train was not slowing down.

Good.  Grief.  That's a heck of a wreck.  No wonder they're leaking diesel.  They're probably leaking every fluid they had.

Just shovel up the remaining shards of metal along with whatever ore you can salvage and just feed the whole thing into a blast furnace.

Clearly failed brakes.  Don't see how PTC fixes that.

About the best that PTC could do is warn any opposing trains before they hit a red block.

Any idea where the crew was?  The sites I've seen just say "the crew wasn't injured because they weren't in the cab", which could mean a lot of things.

Report I read said they jumped, I assume on the realization that the train was slowed but starting to accelerate despite full brake application, both air and dynamics.

I'm waiting with bated breath for the part where UP blames the wreck on the crew because they jumped.

I heard the conductor was off train already due to a coupler issue. I'm not sure how accurate that is because the train would have been stopped already. Unless the engineer started to move the train and the brakes did not respond, I see the conductor being off train and the engineer jumping as unlikely.
