John and Russ: thanks for the info about the sound file.  I'll contact Bryan at SBS.

Make sure you say it's the newer one with the loud alarm bell upon start. He accidentally sent me the older 16-567 file once.

I was considering using the TCS MT1500 decoder for the SD1500.  It's a drop-in decoder and it looks like it was designed for this loco. I've used many TCS decoders and and am very happy with them.

The TCS MT1500 is a direct replacement exactly like the Digitrax. I have one in a LifeLike switcher and it works well.
