I was on Amtrak 48 last week and captured this screenshot just south of Albany.

Didn't know that it ran this fast.
Consist was a single engine, 3 or 4 Amfleet II coaches, Viewliner II diner, Viewliner I sleeper, Viewliner II sleeper, and Viewliner II baggage.

along a 16-mile segment of track between New Brunswick and South Brunswick can accommodate speeds of up to 150 mph

We saw 120 mph coming back to Baltimore from the Springfield show a few years ago, but I forget exactly where that happened.

I'm pretty sure that 110 is Amtrak's max for diesel hauled trains. Anyone know of something higher?

From http://www.realtransit.org/nec7.php

Somewhere in there was where I saw 120 something.  It was an electric loco at that point.

I rode Amtrak between Baltimore and NYC a couple of times in the 90s, but went from Penn Station to DC in 2015, and we maxed out around 127 if memory serves, based upon cell phone GPS readings, I think just north of the bridge near Havre De Grace, MD (which was ironic as I used to love watching trains from that town when I was going through the Ordnance officer's basic course at Aberdeen).
We went an awful lot faster than that on the Eurostar between London and Paris in 2018, but that's another story...

I looked up the rated top speed for Amtrak's P42 diesels.  It's  110 mph.  Electrics are faster.  The new Siemens diesels are rated for 125 mph.

Along 495 in DE next to the river their max speed is 110 there. I was chasing one on the bike a little while back and had to let it go at 104 when i caught up to traffic.

Not far east of Perryville and just west of Elkton, Maryland, I remember that there was once speed limit signs posted on the catenary that read 120 mph.

My girlfriend lives in Elkton and I've been next to the tracks when they go bay at 120. At 20 ft. away it's pretty cool. I would have loved to see a PRR T1 doing that or a Dreyfuss J3.

A tad off Amtrak. I'm looking fwd to the day when the T1 has 5550 complete and she goes to CO to run the test track and beat the Mallards record. If she's as good as they say she will be it shouldn't be a problem.  T1s have already gone faster but it just wasn't documented to prove to England that they lost.

Pretty certain most 80" drivered northerns were ran close to that 126mph record at one time or another.  Hell, the santa fes blue goose had 84" drivers. I'm certain it was run to 120mph in testing!
