Athearn XTTX flats

Anyone received the XTTX flats yet? These are out of my era so I'm not getting any but I'm interested in the hitch placement. Athearn says there are 4 hitches on deck. Was this done to enable bi-directional circus loading?

There's a shyness found in reason
Apprehensive influence swallow away
You seem to feel abysmal take it
Then you're careful grace for sure
Kinda like the way you're breathing
Kinda like the way you keep looking away

I'm guessing it was for 2×40' or 3x 20 trailer placement.

Yeah so far all the supposedly XTTX cars are just TTX cars same as before.  There is one product number that is out of sequence and shown with different artwork on some sites, that might be different.

Was streamed live on youtube 12/28 also
Starting at 04:00” mark there is 40” discussion on these products
No discuss on the XTTX version unless I missed it due to the very slow pace of presentation…

The video is about the new announcements that will arrive probably 12-18 months from now.  (I noticed he didn't actually mention that the RTTX flats in the pictures are RTTX.)

The XTTX flats - which aren't XTTX - were announced mid 2020.

Watched the vid when I got back from.spending a few days off the grid. I unpacked my intermodal flats yesterday getting set up from the move and found out that I actually could use some more TTX flats so it's not so bad that the recent flats are not XTTX. I have a dozen or so Microtains flats that I plan on stripping and converting to WTTX and other variations so I'll grab one of those to make a XTTX flat. I did pre order a couple RTTX let's see what happens.

@daniel_leavitt2000 - no, the opposite. All 4 hitches faced the same direction for circus loading from one direction only.

There was no opposite facing end hitch as per the later Twin 45 / Triple 28 conversions that overhead loading facilitated.

The idea was to be able to haul short trailers more efficiently.  In the 60s, the longest standard trailers were 40 ft, so a hitch on one end, and one in the middle, would hold two trailers.  If one wanted to carry shorter trailers, or the new containers-on-chassis, it would still only hold two.

By adding two more hitches, it could carry three short trailers, one at each end, and one in the middle.

Back then, all hitches had to fold down, so trailers could be backed over them, and only the ones needed would be raised, after that trailer was in place.  They had to park the trailer, pull the tractor out of the way, then raise the hitch.  Tricky, as the trailer kingpin had to be in exactly the right spot to fit the slot in the hitch fifth wheel.  If it wasn't, they had to lower the hitch, respot the trailer, and try again.
