It does seem like the model will shoot off the screen at times.

So how do I stop the clipping plain? I need to be able to zoom in.

So typically a camera will have an invisible target that it always looks at and that the camera will orbit around.  Ideally when you zoom, the target stays in place and just the camera moves in.  Sometimes you can push both the camera and the target in the same direction towards the model which causes the target to push beyond the model.  Since the target is still far away, the close clipping plane may intersect the model and also when you orbit, you're now orbiting an object off in space somewhere.

Cameras can also get messed up with Field of View when it looks like you're zooming in but you'll really just changing the viewing angle.

I don't know Sketchup but what is you're standard way of zooming (which steps of buttons do you take)?

I just use the scroll wheel, dynamic zoom, it's fast.

If you "zoom all" does the part become much smaller and off center, in any direction?  If so, look for a stray line/ artifact at the point diagonally opposite the part.  Any trace will become part of the drawing so the drawing will center in that envelope defined by your actual drawing and the stray artifact.  A zoom select and erase in that opposite area will probably find and delete it even if you can't see it.  If you find and erase it, it will then "zoom all" properly and confirm that you got it.

I'll look when I get home. But it has been this way for a while. This has been a problem for like my last 25-30 drawings.

My guess would be that the camera may not be centered on the model.  Try doing a "zoom extents" before any zooming and see what happens.

So before I try anything. Opened a loco cab:

Then I hit zoom extents

Then I zoom in a little more

I saw a video that listed 6 possible things to try:

OK I watched the video.
1.  Not that zoom extents are fine. See photos above.
2.  Checked and mine is already set to 35
3.  My ~1" cube model is only about 3" away from the base points
4.  Made the model 48 times bigger and it still does it
5.  I've restarted many times over many weeks and months
6.  How do I copy?  I know how to use the move tool to copy, but I have no idea how to copy/paste.  :?

Panning all over I did find 2 edges that will not disappear when I zoom in. These 2 corners are the furthest away from the axis lines.

ok ok ok  I figured out copy/paste in the drop down menus  :D

And I pasted the model into another file.  That worked!  Still doesn't explain what the problem was, but it fixed it.

Not sure about Sketchup, but some CAD tools apply the software settings to the MODEL, not the session.  This could explain why when you copy/pasted the model into a newly opened file that the settings were "reset" to your "default" settings, whatever they are.
