LL / Kato E8 shell swap

Disclaimer; I have searched here and other places without finding a definitive answer.

I’m looking to put a LL E8 shell on a Kato mechanism. Can this be done without modifications to the frame or shell?  I’ve heard both it can and cannot do I’m looking to find out for sure before I purchase the Kato.

Hopefully someone here has attempted this and can shed some light on the subject. Thanks

I’m not sure off the top of my head. I can try it when I get home though. I seem to remember some discussion somewhere about it and it won’t be done without at least a little modification. I think the fuel tank sides are molded on the lifelike and aren’t on the Kato.

I have not done the E-8..
But I have placed an E-6 shell on a Kato chassis.

I think I had to make some very minor mod to get a good fit.  But it was close.

I did it several years ago.  As stated above some truly minor modifications needed to be made to get a “perfect” fit, but it still looks and runs great.

Ditto with Ron, I have placed the L/L E-6 shell on the Kato E-8 mech. fits no problem.... but not the L/L E-8 shell. Gordon

So I can’t give a definitive answer but here is what I can tell you about mine. First off both of my kato have dcc installed so I didn’t remove the decoder. The results may be different with a light board. Secondly, my lifelike shells do not have the porthole glazing. My Katos are from a couple of runs back and the lifelike are both Erie.

I ran into a couple of problems fitting the shell. The led from the decoder seems to be in the way of the shell. It does stick out quite a bit from the decoder. Some decoders may not be as long in the led department but it did keep me from doing a direct swap. The other thing I did notice is that the shell felt loose on the chassis. I can’t speak for how they fit lengthwise but it looked like it would be a fit. Mine don’t have the porthole glazing but I’m not sure that it would be a snug fit with them installed. My gut tells me that it would be too tight but I could be wrong. Also as I suspected the fuel tank molding on the lifelike shell would have to be cut off in favor of the kato.
