I must have the $12 version instead of the $10 version- the fit and finish of my Chinese knock off is MUCH finer than the Chinese knock off in the video.

Me too - mine is also perfectly serviceable. Must have gotten lucky.  :)

I agree.  The one I have from China (analog dial, not electronic) is a very smooth-operating tool, always closes back to dead zero, and now after testing it, I cannot say that the Starrett is any better or worse.  But I paid about $20 for the one from China about 20 years ago, which is a lot more than 10 or 12 bucks today.  It's more like a $40-$50 instrument in today's dollars,  and that's not a cheap tool.

I’ve got one I bought from HF some years back.  It’s blue and works pretty well for what I use it for.
I’m sure if I was a machinist or something, I’d have invested more money.
