Early PS door in N scale
« on: August 19, 2019, 12:02:29 AM »

I am looking for this door.  It is an 8 foot wide PS door from the 1950s, but doesn't look like the PS doors of later years, or the PS doors included with the Atlas PS-1.  So far, the only N scale model I've seen with this door is Atlas Trainman PS-1, and that's the car I'm trying to replace.

Does anyone make this door, or a quality 40 ft PS-1 with this door, in N scale?

Thank you.

I'm not aware of anyone who makes that door, but it would be a good 3D project.

I would consider the Pulllman Standard door to be the 'later' style.  The car in your link was built late '57 (the PS-1 started production in '47).

There is a "modern" PS style, seen on a lot of 1970s and later boxcars, that looks like a Youngstown door at first glance.  Atlas includes those with their PS-1.

This may be "later" than the early PS-1s.  I don't remember ever seeing one of these on a prototype, but looking at pictures of cars that are supposed to have them, they look like Superior doors, unless the light, or weathering, is right.  Then the raised panels are visible.

Duh, yeah, Atlas does make this door for their 8" door cars.

I guess I'm not sure what the difference is between the old Trainman car and the new PS-1 door.

Atlas made the car you linked to.

The only other door that was used that I think were PS and just replacements was this style.

But that doesn't sound like what you're talking about.

Yes, that CNJ car has the door I want, and is the car I want.  I didn't see that door in the package with the last undec PS-1 I bought, so assumed they didn't make it.  Maybe the ones I ordered yesterday will have it!  I'd buy the finished one, but imagine it's long out of stock.  At least, Atlas doesn't have it.

Thank you!

The bottom one is the "modern" style I don't want.

Thank you, but, not being a fan of Ebay, I think I'll letter my own.  I did the one I'm replacing, and the dry transfers are still available, so it won't be any problem.

FWIW, it's just a front for a hobby shop.

Same place, same car.

For future knowledge — the undec versions of the six Atlas PS-1 variations each come with all of the door styles (along with all of the brakewheel styles).  So either of the two 8-variants in undec would have provided the P-S style door as well, plus the benefit of additional spare parts for future projects.

Bryan:  I got my order today, and, yes, they do have the door I wanted.  Already installed, no less!  Of course, having ordered the CNJ car (see above), I no longer need the PS doors...

I wonder why the ones I ordered several months ago didn't have them?  They had all of the others.  Maybe someone forgot to pack them?  Or the factory ran out, and the packer said "No one will notice.".  And I didn't, until now.

The P-S doors may only be included with the 8-foot-door variants. Now that you mention it, I don’t recall seeing a P-S door included with my 7-foot-door undecs.

I believe there is only one road that had the 6' door (MNS), and there are no 7' prototypes for the PS door.

"there are no 7' prototypes for the PS door."

Figures.  The ancient Atlas cars I'm replacing, which look the same as today's Trainman cars, have 7 ft doors.
