Did you know that for a brief period after the Southern absorbed the NS Ry Jan 1 1974, there were actually 2 N.S. locomotives numbered #10?? No? well, read on.... Here we have Southern Ry RS3 #10, on the then brand new Oyama yard (Hickory NC) service tracks. SOU (C&NW) RS3 #10 was built as Carolina & North-western Ry 10, and by the time of this March 9 1974 photo, was the last extant bought-new original C&N-W locomotive in service on SOU's roster. But, look closely at the sublettering underneath the road number 10x; it is plainly marked N.S. !!! What's up with that? Well, when the SOU absorbed NS Ry Jan 1 1974, it actually merged NS into the existing C&N-W, with C&N-W becoming the surviving company, but renamed NS!!. And, as per the agreement, C&N-W 10 became N.S. 10. But, wait, the original NS Ry 10, one of 17 GP18's was still around in March 1974, not being rebuilt to SOU 189 until late summer 1974. That's right, SOU now actually had 2 N.S. #10's. And I'll bet no one up top ever knew But, the numbering conflict was short-lived, as SOU (NS) RS3 #10 was traded in to GE on a new U23B within a month of my photo. Stuff happens............

Carolina and Northwestern!

What little is left is less than ten minutes away.  Norfolk Southern uses the last bit as a branch line down to a scrap metal place just above the NC/SC state line.  There is another scrap yard and a chemical plant just a bit further north.  It connects to the Norfolk Southern main line near downtown Gastonia NC.  North of Gastonia to near Hickory NC you can find the right of way if you know where to look.  Always close to either new US 321 or old 321.  Some of it, near the Lincolnton, NC crossing of CSX, is a bike path, just east of the Courthouse Square running north towards Hickory.  I cross the abandoned right of way near Bowling Green SC almost every day, twice a day.

Nice to see an old bit of history remembered.

Few from recent trip to the WNYP to see the big MLW's before they're gone... heading back June 11th for good measure!

1) Returning from switching Intl Wax on the Farmers Valley, former NYC and CP power pass through Portville, NY.
2) IN a downpour, a turn to Emporium passes under deactivated PRR PL's at Emporium, PA.
3) WNYP 630, 638, 637, 406, 417, 643, and 685 silently pass the night at Olean. Shot includes what I believe are all remaining operable six axle MLW's on roster.
4) Mmm, MLW  :drool:
5) Northbound at Larabee, PA.
