Small grain operations

Just doing a little fishing here but was wondering if anyone had some ideas about small grain operations that own only a few cars.  I've found some of those schemes to be the most interesting and have had a difficult time finding them  I'm sure someone here specializes in this, hoping for some direction.  I've always been a fan of small operations where you can, with little effort create most of what the company owned or at least a good representation.

Thanks

Arizona Grain is NOT a small operation, but a neat one. It is right off of the Sunset Route, and has it's own pampered GE switcher, I think that it it's a 65 tonner.

Loading or unloading grain?

I know of several elevators in Iowa that load 10 or less cars at a time.

Googled: small grain grower railroad cars

Lots of interesting stuff, but stuff

Googled: small grain rail operation

This came up http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?threads/grain-elevator-switching.7548/ and http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=128&t=157453&start=0

Show the whole process. I know large scale, but the procedures would be the same for a small-scale operator. http://www.missouriruralist.com/grain-handling/what-does-rail-grain-facility-look

Are you looking for operations that OWN (or lease) cars, or operations that HANDLE only a few at a time?  There are very few that have their own cars, but a lot that can load/unload only a few.

Joe, you should wander out to Merrill. plenty of small outlets out towards the CA border.

Damn, this is the second time in 48 hours I've been trying to find pics of the weird operation out near Charlestown WV where there was a former coal trestle and a depot being used as a silo.

I saw it a few times on the way to Summit Point and I know I have a 35mm print of it somewhere, but where? Who knows... maybe one of the other locals knows what I'm talking about?

thats right...good trip for this weekend!!  thanks for the reminder.  I actually have one of them scratchbuilt based on photos I took chasing the Modoc Railway a little further south near Tule Lake a few years ago.  Cool

I was going to mention going all the way to Tulelake but apparently, if I am to gain full Oregonian status, I'm not to promote anything California.

On the old N&W? Were you taking Summit Point Road?

Or maybe it was here:

I think it was the next crossing down where I saw, but yes, that spot.

You can see the foundation where the station building was before it was knocked down.

I remember seeing a 100T NS hopper up on the coal trestle and lots of pipes between a shed and the station itself. I wish I had taken more pics.

Not sure if it's the "ideas" you're looking for, but scroll through some of these for car photos:

Lease cars, some small grain companies and elevators will be scattered within:
