Modeling a ribbon rail train

Hi I am trying to model a ribbon rail train (also known as a welded rail or continuous rail train) I have the cars I am having a hard time figuring out how to make the racks and  what to use as the rail. If anyone here has any ideas or has built one and can give me instructions on how to make it it would be much appreciated.  for those who still don't know what I am talking about look at the link below.

I have looked at these and like them but I'm a broke college student and so I'want to see if there is a way to make them first or if someone has one let me borrow it to make a copy

get some Evergreen Styrene I beam in approximately the right width - laminate some square stock to the top with some Bondene or Plastic Weld.  File to the right profile.  Repeat.

Really? Isn't the N Scale Kits something like $24 for 50' of rail *and* the racks for 5 cars? Doing the equivalent in Evergreen (or Plastruct) will be double that by the time you're done, easily. Plus, the N Scale Kits rail is flexible so the train isn't clotheslined on every curve. The fabricated Evergreen rail will be too stiff, as would "real" rail like raw Code 55.

The kit is one of the biggest bargains in the biz. If you want this particular result, I suggest saving your hobby sheckles in other ways.

I did this a few years back. Flat cars - styrene - girder bridge parts for the walkways - ladders - and a kitbashed car to 'ground' or guide the rail to trackside level.









I had some nscale kit rail sent to me to try out.
Even though it was the correct size it was still too rigid to use and negotiate curves. It would fling the cars off the rails.

I've always been interested in rail trains, this thread and the n-scale kits flexible rail have been an eye-opener.

CN    Did you decal the ballast hoppers yourself or were they factory painted?

I just stumbled across this thread..  I was doing a Yahoo "photo" search on "Ribbon Rail Trains".  One of the photos, was linked backed to this thread..
I didn't know this was tried before...

The 50' run of Ribbon rail is still available - http://www.nscalekits.co.uk/welded_rail.html - although stocks are low - we have just sent another order out. We will get a further run - probably after the NSE Convention in June. There are some of the N Scale consists on the web using the ribbon rail.

Why would you get s##t for responding to an old thread?  There's no time limit on responses as far as I know.  If "they" don't like someone responding to an old thread, maybe "they" should delete them after a specified time period.  Sounds like someone spoke out of turn to me.

I got curious too. I took a quick look at wpsnts' posts and the only one I found where he brought back an old thread is

But I didn't see any negative comments about that.  Maybe I missed another one.
I have brought back old threads - if I have something relevant to add, or have a question about the topic, I don't see a problem.
