So what is the Trainman ACF 50' 6" box car? What's its story?

First built in 1974, among the other roads that owned it it is the original Railbox car...

I see two postings on the Atlas site for the single door 5077s and I don't see two versions. Can you explain the differences?

Atlas model is based on the later 5300 cuft Plate C cars rather than the earlier 5077 cuft Plate B cars

Well that's a shame...

Keep in mind that the ACF Plate B cars had three original owners: RBOX, MP, and TP.

Would the ends off a Micro Trains FMC rib side boxcar and the rest of the body of an Atlas ACF precision design rib side box make a reasonable ACF 5077?

I don't think this is correct; the Atlas model is most certainly accurate for plate B dimensions:

I haven't measured them, but here's what Atlas has to say:

"These box cars have a 50' 6" interior length designed to fit slightly larger Plate C dimensions. This yielded a capacity of nearly 5,300 cubic feet"

Botchmann makes an ACF X-post box with non-terminating ends (and the wrong X-panel roof), but I havent taken a close enough look at the rest of the model with either prototype....

The Trainman model is a different/later ACF prototype.

This is the FMC 5077 model : http://www.atlasrr.com/NFreight/n5077boxcar.htm.

If you're getting serious about "appropriate" cars for your era, I highly recommend an equipment register (ORER).  Can't tell the players without a program!

Atlas has three (four) different models:

Trainman "50' boxcar" (ACF 5300 cuft plate C)

Master "ACF precision design" (ACF 5095 cuft plate B)

Master FMC 5077 (early and late versions) plate B

In HO they've also announced a plate C FMC 5347 cuft car, not sure if that's coming for N too or not.

The "precision design" car is an early 1970s design with terminating ends, this type was never fostered by RailBox, but plenty of Class Is from that period.
