So I'm curious about posting photos. It's it better to upload the occasional photo to trw or use a 3rd party site like Flickr or a pay storage sire like smugmug? I'm new to this so any help would be appreciated.

Just my opinion here, but for a casual post now and then, I would just use a board's posting facility. To put large libraries of photos online - in a place you can let others access them - and be sure they are backed up, the photo sites are great. Free ones are good, but the paid ones at least owe you some level of support in case something goes wrong. Smugmug and Zenfolio also allow for advanced features like prints or SELLING your prints and splitting the profits.
There are a ton of these sites out there - each with pros and cons (think of Canon vs Nikon debates). And they morph over time - there was a day when Flickr was beloved by aa lot of people who hate it now.
For something like a photo portfolio though, ie. for pros, I suggest the semi-custom route through Wordpress, Drupal, etc...
