I suspect that's the connection - those are McHenry knuckle springs in the bag, repurposed.

The odd thing here is that the "genuine" McHenry couplers and a bag of springs I own (purchased earlier) are made from spring steel. The Scaletrian's springs are not steel - probably phosphor bronze. So Those are either McHenry clones or McHenry changed from steel to the new material. I actually think that non-ferric springs are better - small steel springs can be prone to rusting.

Clones, licensed production or an otherwise custom run. The ScaleTrains couplers are brown, the McHenrys I have on Athearn locos and cars, and bought a la carte are black. Athearn doesn't list brown versions on their site, whether that's authoritative... :shoulder-shrug: .

I did what the Scale Trains manual suggested. I used the stock box that came with the engine and the 1015 knuckle assembly along with the springs that was provided by Scale trains. It was a bit of a chore but they worked fine for me.
