I did some testing today and determined the problem with some of my track. My layout is a mix of new track pieces and a few pieces from eBay. I replaced all of the older track joiners with new and saw improved operation of the locomotive, but there were still a few spots where the light on the loco would dim. I ran a very smooth sand paper over the used track and now the loco works great.
