Using Flickr for hosting photos for the Railwire. (how to)
« on: August 10, 2016, 04:02:57 PM »
Watching all the headaches everyone is getting over the issues with Google's photo service I decided to put this out there.
I switched over to Flickr for Image hosting last fall and I haven't had any issues since. Realize that not everyone will be interested,
but wanted to show how this alternative works.

Here's a few images that explain the process and show how simple I think it is.

1. Once logged in, click the "Upload" button. (edit: the cloud with the upward facing arrow)

2. Click "Choose photos/videos"

3. Select your photo(s) and click "Open"

4. Your images are now queued up, click "Upload x photo(s)"

5. Click Upload to confirm, Notice I have permissions set to public. This is the default setting, but be sure it hasn't been changed.

6. You are returned to your photostream, click on the image you want to share.

7. Click on the download button and select "view all sizes" from the menu.

8. Choose the size you want your image to be.

9. Right click on the image and select "View image" (or the equivalent option depending on your browser)

10. You now have a direct link that you can use in the IMG tags to post to the Railwire.

That's about it, you can also organize your pictures much better with folders and tags then I have. Since I use it solely to host forum images I see no need.

Your step 6 is what annoys me. Why are all the photos different sizes and why so big where are the thumbnails?

The photos all keep their original aspect ratio so you do wind up with different sized photos.
It would be less of an issue If you only used one camera (the images in step 6 are from 3 different cameras)

If you use the camera roll page or use photo albums you get more traditional thumbnails.
There is also lots of potential for customization, but like I said I use it simply for hosting so I haven't explored that.

Oh I know all of my photos are not the same size, but it is so much easier.

This is one of my folders in Picasa:

And here is the same folder on Google Photos:

See how much less info is on the screen at one time. It now takes so much longer to just find a photo.

I'm on Flickr now. Took me 10 min. of hovering my mouse over everything to even find the upload button  :RUEffinKiddingMe:

Can't even label the buttons  :?

Uploading an album now to Flickr. We'll see how it goes.

Guess I didn't click "upload 226 photos" after it took 15 min for them all to appear. Once I saw them all I just thought it was done.

Maybe I'll follow your directions from now on  :D

I imagine a couple hundred photos all at once would slow things down a bit!  :D
Hope it works out, like I said might not be everyone's cup of tea...

So all my photos uploaded, but they aren't in the album I though they were going into and I can see no way to put them into the album. This whole interface really blows.

You're forcing me to learn this stuff  ;)

After Opening an album click on "edit in organizr"

All Images are on the bottom, you can select images and drag and drop.

Thanks for that. I had already figured out how to upload to the album. Now I have 2 of every photo and it's not clear where the ones are that aren't in the album.

It is like every page on Flickr has a whole different set of buttons and none are labeled.

Anyone use the mobile app to upload?

Here's a Clerihew about Ed. K.

Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
But mention his law
and you've pulled your last straw!

Alternate version:
Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."
