Serving Quarry that produces dimensional stone

I have a spot on a layout I am designing that seems to be best suited for a rock quarry.  I want it to produce "dimensionsal" stone, which is blocks of various sizes, some quite large for building things like monuments, and others not so large for more mundane uses.

I am wondering what sorts of railcars would be used to serve it, and, if flat cars, how loads would be secured.  I assume that the "waste" rock chips would be sold as aggregate, shipped in hoppers or gondolas.

Info and suggestions, please.

I've seen gons in this service frequently. I don't know about flat cars.

What era are you planning? also what region? The Rutland is a good example of a railroad that hauled alot of this traffic, they used both flats and gondolas depending on the load...

Probably their most famous load.

And some more common examples.

Here's an older example.

For large squarish stones, it was common to ship on flatcars, frequently with nothing holding them on except some blocking around the edges.  No need to tie them down, as they won't bounce or blow away, just keep them from sliding.  That would make a very simple removable load, which could be held down with double-sided repositionable tape.  Or, if your road ships a lot of the same size, glue the blocking to the deck and leave the stone loose.

OMG, that looks like quite a load for a truss-rod flat car with arch bar trucks!

This is just the kind of info I was hoping for.  Some covered (finished, I guess) stones and some not covered, and how they are fastened.

I am thinking about including a finishing plant down on the mainline, not far from where the quarry branch comes in.  So, blocks would probably go there uncovered from the quarry, but might go out from there with covers.  I am thinking that covers would really only serve to keep the coal grime off the light colored rock.  In my location (Allegheney Plateau) and era (transition period), only sandstone seems like a credible dimensional rock product.  And, sandstone is more easily stained than granite, hence covers seem logical.

Thanks for the info.  More on quarrying or finishing would still be appreciated.

I think most of the big stuff came from the areas centered on Vermont, Colorado, and Indiana, right?
