yes...
definitely a more orange tint than the first Kato releases ( in the more simplified Kato painting of that era-no kick plates, tiny class lettering, etc...)
I searched, specifically for these units as I like the 'Faded' color of this release...
A lot of documentation and discussion on Santa Fe 'warbonnet red'...tons of photos, taking into account the type of film, age, etc show a pretty wide spectrum of colors for these units...( I can only believe this was due to fading)
My 1957 era depicts units a year or two before they would have been shopped to gain the various nose grabs, antenna plane, mu receptacles, and repaints that the PA fleet, along with the E and F fleet, received during their overhauls in '59-'60...
another shot of these units in this color...

Those are almost bordering pumpkin orange to me.  But you know more than me about ATSF.  :)  I guess I'm used to seeing the deep red warbonnets on all the ATSF toy trains. Also the hobby paints (like Accu Paint) seem to represent the deeper red (probably matched to a fresh paint chip rather than a faded locomotive).

By the same token, shouldn't the dark yellow areas be also faded to a lighter shade?

Pumpkin orange! Peteski, them are fighting words for us Santa Fe guys!  :D Think BNSF...
Actually, I think we are all used to seeing the manufacturers' various versions of Warbonnet red. In reality, the pre-war reds were much oranger, and the post-war reds, while redder, had a tendency to fade badly; red paint was/is notorious for going off the spectrum.
The pic below was taken in San Bernardino Precooler yard on what I believe was a fan trip circa 1954-ish...
I think Bruce has the color nailed.

And I have no clue why anyone would downvote you for that comment.

You mean orange pumpkin?  ;)
It is a ripe pumpkin!  :D  Seriously though, I just found a random photo on the Internet.

As far as the down-votes go (on non-controversial posts), that has been happening to me lately. I even started a thread on it: https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=38510.0
