DC Wireless Control? (DC ONLY PLEASE)

(NOTE: I know there is DCC avaliable now but I would like to stay with DC and cheap as possible plese)

I am hoping to start work on a small 2'10 with a 2'x8' leg L shaped switching layout. I would like wireless control for this but not something very expensive. I will only be using one engine at a time, either a Atlas Classic GP7, A Trackmobile or a Kato Engine. I would prefer not to install any decoders or receivers though if it is required I could do with it. So anyone have any suggestions (or an old one they no longer need?) Any help would be appreciated

How comfortable are you with home-brewed electronics and smartphones?

Many years ago I used to visit a layout using wireless DC throttles. It has been upgraded to DCC since that time. IIRC, they used Catnip throttles from some company in Australia.

It wasn't my favorite wireless setup. It used IR (not radio), so you had to have the throttle in the line of sight with the receiver. The speed was controlled by push buttons (not a knob).  It wasn't fun when used for switching.  Mainline running wasn't bad.

Thanks for the tips I actually have come up with a solution and ended up doing opposite I what I was planning  Someone on another forum I post on (Model Railroad Hobbyist) has an old MRC Prodigy DCC (Of Course) system that they are sending me free. Another thing I love about model railroading is that kindness.
