It is odd that 1:150 Japanese cars look acceptable, while 1:148 British ones don't, but I've noticed the same thing.

I 100% disagree with this idea. 1:150 cars look ridiculous to me on a 1:160 layout.

I sucks because Tomytec did a Datsun 240z that is awesome, but its just too big for my eyes.

That is true - the larger scale doesn't work for all car models.  The car you mention is a very specific looking vehicle. But if you take a very generic 4-door Toyota (from Kato), it can easily pass for another generic full-size sedan (like a Ford).  Some of the Tomytec 1:150 minivans also look acceptable (probably because many Japanese minivans are smaller than American minivans, so they still look alright on a 1:160 layout).

Peteski:  I think you hit it.  Japanese cars, more so than many British, look like smaller versions of American cars, so the oversize models still look "right", even if they don't look like a particular make/model.  I have a lot of the Kato Toyotas, and they look right at home.  I also have one of the Tomy-Tec Datsuns, painted the same color as the one we bought in 1967, and it looks fine.  It's oversized, but the original (sitting behind our house now) is so small, that even the 1:150 model is a "compact car", about the size of a 1:160 Volkswagen Beetle.  Many of the 1960s Tomy-Tec cars work just as well.  The newer models aren't so usable, possibly because they're more recognizable.  Of course, they're also useless to me because of the era, so I haven't tried them.

Many British cars look distinctive enough that even casual viewers recognize them, and then notice the size.  The same goes for Mark5's 240Z.  People know what it is, and how big it should be.

You put a 1:148 Morris Traveler next to a really large building it gets small really fast. You take a Wheels of Time Bus and slap it next to the Athearn Bus and the Athearn looks out of place. Its all in how you make the scene with the vehicles that make it believable.
