I wouldn't be surprised if some of it had to do with rents too.

Rents, yes, and maybe lease contracts with severe early-out clauses. I'm sure the accountants ran the numbers until they squeaked (the numbers, that is). Our armchair quarterbacking doesn't have enough hard info.

But it still doesn't make sense to me that the busiest store in a 40-mile radius is axed while the snoozer hangs on. :?

I've heard a number of those that are "franchises" aren't being shuttered while others that are corporate owned are,

Yeah, I'm thinking this has a whole lot more to do with depreciation and site lease buyout contracts (i.e. termination exposure) that pure sales.  I also suspect that the franchise holders (if they exist) may have a difference.
