Bachmann 2-8-0 front pilot conversion

I want to lash up two Bachmann Connies but the dummy pilot is useless.
What can I use?

I just checked the Micro-Trains conversion page, but they say there is no pilot conversion available for the Spectrum 2-8-0.

Just had a look at mine, I think it's a 2004.

Edit: A 905 (Z scale) can be used as well.

The 204 is for the tender. There is none available for the pilot. I was just wondering if anyone had a brilliant suggestion. My friend used a 905 (with a lot of fiddling). I was wondering if the long pilot for the Kato Micado could be made to work.

Not the best pictures but should do. I cut the back off the 2004 box so that it would fit and there was a bit of cutting/filing on the pilot.

The only potential issue is that the pilot truck doesn't swing as far now. The front axle, however, has plenty of play and it hasn't been a problem on 12" curves. Don't have anything less than that to test it on.

I opened the hole till a 903/5 fit and trimmed the back of the box:

I used the Micro-Trains 2004 as well. I cut the box down and rounded the corners to add clearance for the pilot wheels.

It's a little hard to see in the picture, but when pilot wheels would begin to rub on the coupler box, the other wheel would also rub the cylinder.
I've not had this happen yet, and my minimum radius is 10" R.

Seriously good photography! It illustrates your good work, and the quality of the Bachman model. I'm not sure I really understood how good that model really is until now.

The easiest way to do this would be to use the supplied Rapido coupler on the pilot of one unit and on the tender of the other.Probably not the most visually pleasing way though.

I did this a few years ago and did a simple drop in of the MTL 1043-1.  It took a very small amount of filing but it was straight forward.  I am not sure of the availability of the MTL conversion as it was for the Rivarossi 4-6-2 or 2-8-2.

N scale supply lists it for about $15, and MT has given it a new code number so must still be made...?
