28' UPS pup trailer - versions?
« on: December 07, 2013, 09:23:12 AM »

After starting my UPS Mack Vision project, I have been looking at 28' pup trailers, and seeking info about models and variations.  I have a handful of the drop frame trailers by Trainworx, but it appears that UPS is using a level floor on most of their recent trailers.  Even among photos that I can find of the 28' pups, there seems to be at least a couple of versions in the fleet.

Anyone know the specifics of these trailers?

I am toying with the idea of designing one for 3d printing.  The only hesitation I have is that long flat surfaces are not ideal for printing.  It is worth a try, and a rectangular box is easy to design.

If you can find a copy of the Intermodal Modelers Guide, or something along those lines, was made by Model Railroading Magazine, believe its volume 2, has an entire section on UPS trailers.  Its all HO, but the prototype info should work.

If you can't find a copy, I'll try to scan the prototype sections whenever I have some time.

I had all 18 numbers from Trainworx preordered, but looks like my dealer dropped that one.  Well atleast 6 numbers released so far.

The only pups Trainworx has released so far are the "Modern" number series that correspond to the shield logo.  The others haven't made it yet.   I keep hearing "soon" but no update in the past month or two.

I don't believe the Intermodal Modelers Guide referenced has info about the non-drop trailers...could be wrong about that though.  I have them but they're in storage right now.   Some great UPS modeling information otherwise, regardless of scale.

I would definitely be in for some of the straight-side trailers.  I was thinking of doing some stand-ins using the Athearn pups but it hasn't made the project list yet.   I might be interested in shapeways versions, depending on how they came out.   But again, I've got so many other projects in the pipeline I'm not sure I would even pull the trigger right now.   I really need to focus on my existing pile first.   I am digging the stuff you are doing on Shapeways, HuskerN....hopefully that stuff is still around when I get back into "acquire mode".

The "Intermodal Modeler's Guide Vol 2" contains info on drop bottom pups.  As far as I can tell,  the newer 28' trailers are just like any other 28' trailer just with the corners angled and not rounded.  Just what I've seen going up and down the highway.  I've not paid enough attention to the mfg of the trailers.   I can't be entirely sure, but haven't they just started using the straight frame pups here within the last couple of years?  Or is it a little longer than that?   Head over to  http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/ for photos of UPS equipment past and present.  I can spend the good portion of the day looking through the site.

I would think a good 53' sheet-post trailer would be more popular. These are by far the most popular trailers on the road and none are made in N scale.

But they're not as cute. Everybody knows that pups are the cutest things around!  :D

Screw the pups... lemme have them 53' suckers...  :D

I would actually be in for some modern 28' UPS trailers, the ones out now are just a bit too far back in time for me.

Stumbled upon this website while looking for photo's of trailers for some idea's for my intermodal trains.  I checked the info on the web page against the chart for UPS 28' drop bottom trailers in my copy of "Intermodal Modeler's Guide Vol. 2", and the data matched up to 1990.  That's the cut off year for the book's info.   There's no dimensions, but gives the manufacturer of the straight frame trailers.
