My old layout (1993-1999)

I starting building this layout when I was 16.  I got tired of a 2x3 nscale table layout and wanted to build a shelf layout.  All the buildings were built out of card stock from old shoeboxes, and based on prototypes in the Chicago/Milwaukee area.

Cool find.  Clearly you were well on your way to your world renowned status back then.  But what was the Centerbeam flat delivering to the brewery?

Great for a 16-year old, and it even looks finished.

Is the corn astro-turf?  What kind of sound system did you have?  What was the ops concept? :)

Yep, the corn is a cheap doormat!  The sound was from the Sound Master 210.  I wired several speakers below the layout and could flip them on or off depending on where the engine was.

Not much of an ops concept existed:  I would just shuttle freight cars back and forth.  The layout was 14' long, 12' along one wall and a 2' extension at a right angle.

Those old crossing gates kinda give away the age.  Nice job Tom.

“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life.
When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up.
 I wrote ‘happy’.
They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”

That is nice, Tom. I can't believe you had a sound system back them. That's cool.
