New Tunnel Motors from Athearn

These are supposed to be new tooling, but look the same as before.  They are in slightly differently designed boxes.  The only thing really different is that a little package of extra detail parts is included.  I don't know how they run...yet. ;)

Handsome units. But... man, the handrailing is really wonky on both of them.

When you side light them like that, it's really obvious that they're missing all the "junk" that lives under the walkways, like the traction motor cables, etc...

Man those look good!  Might have to replace my LTEX project with a newer model.

I really like the see-thru grilles.  Are they at all sound-friendly?

I'd rather add my own traction motor cables & other details than have a more expensive Genesis model with detailing that has to be removed.  I also like making my own handrails, but it is so hard to find stanchions nowadays.

No ditch lights tho... time for the Richmond Controls #603 LEDs...

I don't really know what "sound-friendly" means in HO,  but Kato units have provisions for speaker installation in the fuel tanks; but these Athearn units do not.

Is there a guide on what details are necessary for under the frame applications?

Not really, but a good place to go for inspiration and to get acquainted with the process is Brian Banna's site:

(Though, after seeing the Modutrak N scale layout at Naperville RPM, word on the street is that he sold off all his HO and is inspired to do some N scale projects again. :D

I know this is an old thread, so I apologize for asking, esp. as I'm sure I must have just missed them.... Tom, did you ever post any pix of these after weathering them?

Thanks,
Ed

Ed, I only weathered the DRGW one.  The others I'm saving to weather for the video!
