MM does some really nice work, but I wish he would be more amenable to sharing his techniques with the rest of us.

I know a lot of people feel this way, but I can't fault the guy for keeping techniques close to the cuff if that's his perogative. Model Railroaders as a whole are more coorperative than other hobbies, but we shouldn't expect everyone to feel the same way.
Having said that, look at the models closely and you'll figure out what you need to do to get his look. Highlights and shadows are the key.
