I love you Chris.   :-*

Is it still a Mars light?  Used to be that whole assembly rotated, so it could sit at any angle when it stopped moving... but I can't imagine the mechanism is still there, let alone functional.

They got to be a maintanance headache, so instead of the revolving figure-8 pattern, the Metra engines just have a light that sweeps back and forth now.  Couple old timer engineers complain that it puts them to sleep.  The Mars pattern was less inducive to hypnotizing you because it was less predictable.

The light's the only thing that's straight!  (Photographer must have a short leg...)

It could be that you are looking at the light reflecting off the lens, and not the light source itself.

Sorry, I'm talking about the actual headlight parts inside. See those vertical lines just to the right and left of the lights?

That's the edge of the actual headlight part. They look to be off kilter in there.

If it is, it's obviously within FRA specs. It might be off a degree or two. I challenge anyone to be more accurate drilling two holes in N scale!

First, the note that they can be locked into vertical position if mechanism is broken:

And here's some great shots showing the mechanism that tipped and rotated to give the figure 8 pattern.  If this mechanism is still in the NS unit, then it's probably just sitting cocked a bit.
