scratch build a chain link fence

The fence looks darn good.  I would tone down the rust on it....otherwise FANTASTIC!

That looks really good! I like the coloration, as I've seen some chain-link that's actually that rusty.

Real chain-link has diamonds that are 2" on a side, or about 3" tall since they're on their corners. That would mean a 9-foot fence would be about 36 diamonds high. I count about 24-25 diamonds high in your pictures, which means you're within 50 percent of scale--not bad at all. And it looks right, which is the most important thing.

The model's in HO scale, correct? What material did you use for the fencing? In N scale, I had good success using chiffon:

That would be far too small for HO-scale fencing, though.

The rusting was done in about 10 minute, really.  I did the rust to just color the sample a little since this was only a sample and I didn't even look at any photos.
Thanks for the info zox - I got the material at Michael's Art & crafts store.  It's called Tulle and in the wedding section.  Best of all it's on sale right now and you can get more then you'll ever need for $5.  Yes, this is HO scale.

I used some bridal veil material.  I colored it with a silver sharpie, and used straight pins with the heads cut off for posts.  This is in a background location so I didn't go all out detailing it.  When I do the fence around the lumber yard I'll probably use brass wire soldered together to get the top bar and various bracing.

It looks to be the same material your using in HO, Dave, which looks pretty good on yours, perhaps a bit large on mine.  In person it's not so  bad.

I like the scale of Zox's fence, though...

Chiffon looks really good.

One of our guys used some bridal veil-like material for the larger square barbed wire fences that are four feet tall and commonly seen on farms and such.
