Bachmann taking reservations on N scale H16-44.

According to Brooklyn Locomotive Works' website, Bachmann has announced an N scale version of its Fairbanks-Morse H16-44. This is the "mini-Trainmaster" body style as opposed to the earlier Raymond Loewy body on the Atlas H15 and 16-44's. Due this October.

It will come in ATSF, B&O, CP, N&W, SOU, and VGN. Here's the Virginian version:

A Bachman diesel really gives me pause. The SD45 wasn't exactly spectacular in looks nor performance so this doesn't really excite me. My only hope would be that the shell is good enough to fit over a LL or Atlas drive mechanism.

Nothing said about an undecorated being offered. Guess you'll have to strip one.    I too have my doubts about a model with a street price of only $36.49..

If that's the case, I don't mind stripping one and using the Atlas chassis. 

This is an interesting choice for Bachman's 'standard' line, isn't it.

I'm definately gonna have to see this before buying. The Bmann SD45 had fatal detail errors :. This will be of course the late version of the H16-44.

You're off by a factor of three, there. BLW is offering them for $36.49, they list for $54.95.

MSRP data points from Bachmann's website:

The B23-7/B30-7 (?!?) in Chessie and BN has an MSRP of $50. I've seen it as low as $25 recently.

The GP40 in Conrail, Alaska, etc. has an MSRP of $33. I've seen it as low as $14.99 in a not-so LHS in the Buffalo area. And now I can also understand that there are sellers on eBay that are trying to get full boat on them.

The GP50 (high hood) is also $33.

The U36B is $31.

The Plymouth switcher is $30. This has been reworked and runs significantly better than it used to.

I note that the former E-R Models Sharknoses are in at $125 for the pair as "Spectrum" models. I have a pair in D&H from the E-R run and I like them, and by the way, the MSRP was higher than $125 for the set. Based on the LHS's sticker it looks like it was $140.

Some other "Spectrum" items:

The Dash 8-40C is $135.
The SD-45 is $90.
The F7A and B pair is also $90. (I did not see the train set version of the F7 listed as a separate item.)

Thus, I hope that the shell will go onto an Atlas or LL chassis.

Yes, it is a standard line according to the Bachmann website.

It's also been pointed out on another forum that the phase modeled should be different from the Atlas offerings-- high walkways all the way across.
