I think the one non-blue hood is yellow, not white. It's hard to tell. It even looks yellow
where the mostly non-rusty supports are when you lighten the photo. I say this because of
the logo size also...unless Red Rock can find a white one with the bigger "CSX". Either way, I'd
say there are yellow CSX hoods because that's what my Walthers model has.

Do you have a pic of your HO Walthers car? I looked on their site and all their CSX cars have blue covers. I'm not trying to dispute you, but having a car number that had these yellow hoods would be helpful in my proto photo search. I spent a great deal of time last night looking through CSX coil car pics, and saw no yellow CSX hoods. But I'll consult the coil car Yahoo Group and see what info they can offer.

Kluke, the logos look like the same size to me. It looks like it was placed lower on the hood. They do vary in placement pretty good from hood to hood, as seen below.

Was this hood yellow at one time? I always thought of them as orange, but maybe it is a color shift.

Is the hood yellow or white? In defense of yellow, I've never seen a white one so rusty. But in the second photo of Tom's post, if you look to the left, there is a yellow hood barely visible. If you compare it to the hood in question, it does seem white to me.
But now to really throw a wrench into it, look at the construction of the Chessie hood. It looks like a match. If the one your trying to figure out is an ex-Chessie, it must have been a very early re-paint.

I just checked the file section of the Coil Car group, and CSX most definitely did have some yellow hoods.

I just bought a 3 pack of the current N-scale Red Caboose CSX Spring Hill coil car kit from MB Klein and the phone person told me he thought he had another 3 pack around. No singles. Also got the lone pack of round covers (that's 2 more) they had in some other road name, so they'll get stripped. I've been getting the challenge cars since June just haven't gotten around to doing any yet...

So I make this offer. They should ship out to me today, I should have them by the weekend. I'll offer 2 of them at 1/3 each of what I paid, so nobody needs buy a 3 pack if they don't want. Plus shipping, whatever the new postal rate is. I'll offer a single extra round cover to 1 person also if they wish it, but I figure I want at least 1 extra for myself ;) The total I was given on the phone was less than just the cost of the 3 pack, and it included shipping and the extra pack of covers, so I can't tell what the price is as I'm sure the total I got was wrong (even allowing for their 10% after Xmas sale) which is why I just say 1/3  :-\

I'd hate to be the reason someone didn't do a car since I've been way too slow on doing the challenge cars myself.

Hey folks!
I'm not in this challenge, but was informed earlier tonite by a bud that he gets these cars in his shop on regular basis from what I understand (he was a bit "under the influence" unfortunately)-not any "matches" to the prototype, but if someone needs a reference pic of some sort, I can lend him my cam & he can get a pic possibly if needed, & if a car is there (he works in a heavy metal galvanizing shop)-just let me know!

I got out on Thursday, yea the sun actually made an appearance, and took some pics. I didn't realize I had this until going through them tonight.

I think this is one of those much talked about, but seldom seen, elusive, yellow hoods. What do ya think?

I think that's a very faded white hood. I can't believe that dayglo yellow CSX seems to favor would bleach so pale but on the other hand I sure can see white fading, yellowing and getting dirty to that color in time easily.

The yellow that CSX used when it first started to letter cars "CSX" was very similar to the yellow Apalachicola Northern used on its chip hoppers, and that coil hood is exactly  the color that AN's chip hoppers faded to after a decade, so I'll bet it's a yellow hood. Note also the space under the CSX, between the letters and the line. That dates to when "TRANSPORTATION" was part of the CSXT logo. So that's an early paint job, pre 1990 or so.

1. What does that small bit of yellow text say on the right side near the step...directly above
the truck (not on the frame)?

2. What does the yellow text say on the END under the reporting mark...to the right of the
    brake wheel?

If anybody has an idea, that would be great. In the meantime, I'll keep looking.

Jeff (MrKLUKE)

P.S. I'm refering to the challenge car...

I'm not clear what you mean, but if you're talking about the small lettering directly under the "ING" of Restricted Loading on the hood and above the springs of the truck, to the right of the defect card holder on Red Rock's photo, that usually is brake shoe information like "HD COMP SHOES", so a car knocker knows which to get off the carr if one needs replacing. I don't see a brake wheel in any of the photos?

Mr. KLuke, the words in the middle of Photo 1, single line above the springs and below the graffiti star say "JACKING PAD". Can't read the words on the end in Photo 2, but suspect they deal with the specs of the cushion underframe.
