Yankee Dabbler “shipping protection fee”
« on: March 20, 2025, 02:58:27 PM »
Beware Yankee Dabbler is adding a “shipping protection fee” to their online shopping cart orders. It is a percentage of the total purchase.

The user has to opt-out. If you don’t, you get charged.

It’s easy to miss and I got charged almost $4 extra on my latest purchase.

Rob

EDIT: I am not suggesting this is nefarious (thought opt-outs suck), just alerting modelers to take note of the charge.

Possibly, though if it is why not call it insurance and make it an opt-in instead of an opt-out?

On the checkout screen, if you open your itemized list you will see: “Disclaimer: This is an optional additional service for expedited replacements and is not a shipping fee.”

If it’s postal insurance that sure is a round about way of saying so.

IIRC, I thought I read the added cost was for damage, loss or theft including Porch Pirates

Factory Direct Hobbies is doing it too.  It's for theft.

The irony is that I am from New Jersey. A “protection fee” has a very specific meaning to us. ;-)

I f you look into it most of those shipping protection fees are charged and collected by whoever processes their online payments.  It is not handled by YD or USPS and if you utilize it you have to do it through the processor.  Supposedly it makes it easier to get reimbursed but I have yet to hear of anyone that as had to avail themselves of the service.

Nice layout you have there. Be a shame if something happened to it.  :o  :D

Should be an opt in, not opt out, charge.

Should be an opt in, not opt out, charge.

Except that no one would opt in, and there’s probably a few that don’t opt out.  “Phase 3, profit!”
