New Run of Atlas GP-38 ditchlights set up

Cracked open a new Atlas GP-38 and found a new setup for how Atlas is wiring ditch lights.

Makes me wonder about the decoder equipped ones if they will have plugs also

Is it difficult to put the shell back on with the way the wires are attached to the shell?

I believe they would be using the same analog lightboard as per your photo but plug an E24 decoder in (where the blanking plug is).

All locos come with the new style motherboard (+speaker). Sound-equipped models come with a decoder plugged in.

Wires weren't the problem on putting the shell back on.  But it is a VERY tight fight on the chassis.  Wires had memory that kept them above the board

I didn't notice that it was a e24 so my question is answered.  I'm not up on the newer pin decoders yet

Next18 and E24 are the only 2 DCC connectors which will fit in N scale narrow hood diesels (Actually I'm not sure if Next18 would even fit, so it might just be E24).

Interesting that Atlas moved away from using decoder-mounted LEDs with fiber optics in the shell and instead mounted LEDs somewhere in the shell with wires and connectors to deal with.  However I was not a fan of the fiber-optic lit ditch lights as they were rather dim.  If in this  model the LED is mounted in or close to the ditch light housing, one would hope that they are much brighter.

It also appears that they are using flex circuit board for holding the LEDs. That's a first for Atlas.  It would have been even better to extend the flex circuit to create a direct flex connection to the light board in the chassis.  They got it right, but only half way.   I suspect that it is due to the JST 0.8mm pitch connectors they already have on the light board.  There might not be a JST connector which can be connected directly to a flex board circuit.

Here is an example of flex board.

The ditchlights are very nicely lit in this model.  I should have taken pic, and on the FURX unit, they are porch mounted

You're correct in that those two form factors are the only ones that fit into the narrow hood diesels, Atlas uses the Next18 in their SD45's.

Are they dim like the previous production run?

Thanks,
