This is a beautiful time for the New York Central faithful, with Michigan Central Station restored, the Hickory Creek observation car going up and down the Hudson River, and now this fantastic news!

Oh cool.
They can patch them both with worms and doublehead it with the T1.

I'm incredibly excited for what this means.

But I also think that no railroad knew how to make ugly steam engines like the Central did. Lol

Don't hold your breath.

That link shows that they are a very loooooog way from their financial goal for this restoration.

Sadly, such a worthy project takes both a lot of money and a long time.  And as time goes by, the number of people that are both interested in and willing to contribute to such a restoration dwindles.

I wish them the best.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I love NYC steam, always found them to be very proportionate, well balanced in looks, and I am super excited about this. :)

Believe me, it will get done.

They know what they are doing, having restored other steam.

There are plenty of NYC fans out there who would love to see a mainline NYC steam locomotive under its own power again, and, with the fact that they have their own trackage and rights to run, plus having a bunch of actual NYC passenger cars to pull as well, this will be huge.

I have already donated. And as the word spreads, I have no doubt they will reach their goal. Will it be overnight? No, of course not. But they will get there.

I was there for the third time and I always climb aboard and hangout in the cab for no less then 30 min imagining me driving her along at no less then 60mph. After driving 765 for 30 min, come on, I can dream.   Wake up dummy I say, it will never happen.  Glad I was wrong.  They will need to rip her to pieces every nut and bolt. She is a mess. New tires for sure. The main drive set has grooves worn no less then .250 deep ! That's 1/4" for the none machinist.   I was happier then a clam at high tide when I first heard about 3001 rebuild.   I really did get to drive 765 for 30min and fire another 30 when in OH but I only got to 18mph until Zack said to back off a tad.

Yeah, I get you. Believe me, I am excited for her. Will be a few years, but man, to have an actual mainline NYC steamer, on NYC trackage? Cant wait. Maybe now a manufacturer will do some more mainline steam for NYC other than the Hudson from Bachmann which I was still happy to see in N scale. Only others were brass.

I was able to get this pic of 3001 in the background when 765 was pulling employee excursions for NS.

Can't wait to get them both in a picture again, but both under steam, and maybe finally look into volunteering with the FWRHS.

As a local to the area, I wish them well. I'd rather have seen them work on their Wabash unit, but I get it's easier to raise money for a NYC engine than it is for a Wabash 0-6-0.

It's also a lot easier to recoup the investment too. You can move a lot more meat with the Mohawk.

There's a decent discussion about it here, if you're interested: http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=48353
