Bachmann's new "Chemical Tank" Cars have landed

Interesting that Bmann did "large dome" and "small dome" versions.

Penn Salt TELX 237 - no idea if that's legit. Found a proto photo of  TELX 237 here (scroll down a bit to find it) http://modelingthesp.blogspot.com/2020/08/tank-cars-in-service.html The real 237 appears to be a larger tank.

Hooker SHPX 15884 - sorta resembles the Tangent HO GATC 8000 gal., but the # series on the Tangent model are in the 64600 series  https://www.tangentscalemodels.com/product/gatx-hooker-chemicals-1950-gatc-8000-gal-acid-tank-car

More that it appears to be a shorter prototype.  I'm on the fence.  The Penn Salt is the only scheme that fits into my era.  I might pick up one to redecorate into a more prototypical era-appropriate scheme.  Probably the small dome model, although the large dome looks pretty nice.

I was kind of thinking the same thing.  Other than the details, which appear to have been improved, it looks pretty much like their older 41' Tank Car.

Hmmmm, the Tangent H.O. car is same price as the Bachman N scale car, although I have no clue as to what year those *Tangent) prices are from, I think I'd buy the Tangent and put it into the shrink machine!

   Yes, they do have a few more details, smaller ladders, smaller platform rails, and working couplers.  At $29.99 from Train World, they are an option, especially if you need the new names like Hooker or Penn Salt.  Train World site has better expandable pictures of them.

Greetings Railwire community! Tyler from Bachmann product development here. This is a project I had a hand in and am quite proud of, so I'm happy to answer some of the questions and clarify some comments in this thread.

Regarding the "new and existing tooling" label, the only thing that's pre-existing on this car is the standard Bachmann couplers and trucks. Everything else from the frame up is brand new tooling. As you can see, there's no comparison with the original tank car tooling from the 1970s:





Our model represents 10,000 gallon insulated cars; the "small dome" version is a pressurized car, while the "large dome" is a non-pressurized general service car. We recognize that some of the paint schemes may be "close enough" representations and we'll be seeking out the closest matches possible for future releases.

On the Diamond Chemicals car- as mentioned above, the Tangent paint scheme is in a different series, and Diamond had cars with both type domes. Our files have a scan of a Diamond painted tank car, SHPX 19419, showing the small dome. I'm not sure where it was originally published, possibly in an issue of Mainline Modeler?

Welcome to The Railwire.  I, for one, like reading commentary from manufacturers on their models- it can save lots of time otherwise spent on speculation and pouring through books and photos when questions are answered by the folks who made the model.  My question- Can you tell us what the specific prototype of the chemical tank car is?

Reviewing my notes the specific prototype is an ACF 10000 gallon car. The large dome version represents ICC 103W spec tanks, while the small dome version represents an ICC 105A500W car.
